ST. LOUIS 鈥 Violence could erupt this fall when students from tornado-damaged schools move into rival buildings, a union leader warned 狐狸视频 Public Schools.
Students in middle and high schools can be territorial and 鈥渁re willing to defend violently if necessary that claimed territory from students outside their respective neighborhoods,鈥 said Ray Cummings, president of the American Federation of Teachers Local 420 in a letter Thursday to Superintendent Millicent Borishade and the 狐狸视频 Board of Education.
The school district sustained an estimated $77 million in damages to 12 buildings in the May 16 tornado. The district has submitted insurance claims and applied for federal disaster aid to fund the repairs, according to Borishade.
Students and staff in seven significantly damaged buildings will transfer for the fall semester to host schools that were chosen for 鈥渂ell schedules, proximity from the original schools, space utilization, athletics and principal input,鈥 Borishade told staff members in a memo Wednesday.

鈥淭his decision was made to provide stability and continuity for your children while we meticulously work through the complexities of rebuilding. The step will also allow for bus rerouting and sufficient time for extensive repairs to damaged schools to be completed,鈥 Borishade wrote in a separate email to families.
The union president said he is most concerned with Yeatman-Liddell Middle School moving into Gateway Middle more than 3 miles away, and Sumner High moving 2 miles to Clyde C. Miller Career Academy. Students who receive job training in cosmetology, culinary and medical assistant fields at Beaumont High will also transfer to Miller for those classes.
Borishade, who arrived from Seattle in 2023, did not consult with the teachers鈥 union before announcing the relocations.
鈥淪ome people say that people who are not from 狐狸视频 don鈥檛 understand ... it鈥檚 very dangerous for students crossing boundaries,鈥 Cummings said.
Some of the merged schools could be crowded in the fall. Yeatman-Liddell and Gateway middle schools enrolled a combined 737 students last year while host Gateway has a building capacity of 658, according to the district鈥檚 .
Host school Miller Career Academy has a capacity of 1,013, while the combined enrollments of Miller, Sumner and Beaumont last year was 1,253. Beaumont鈥檚 enrollment includes students who are bused from Miller, Sumner and four other high schools for part of the day.
鈥淎nother important factor not considered in making these temporary moves appears to be the conditions that exist in the receiving schools like Clyde Miller and Gateway Middle,鈥 Cummings wrote to SLPS leaders. 鈥淐lyde Miller over the past several years has struggled with a large number of students involved in fighting through the school year. Gateway Middle has its own set of issues that should be cause to consider an alternate site for Yeatman.鈥
Cummings suggested vacant schools as alternative hosts 鈥 Stevens Middle School to house Sumner students and Ford or Gallaudet schools for Yeatman.
At a community meeting Wednesday, several teachers and parents said they fear the damaged schools will be permanently closed. District leaders have not said whether the tornado will change the 鈥淩eimagining SLPS鈥 school consolidation plans for fall 2026.
鈥淭here is no list of buildings we have predetermined that are closing,鈥 Borishade said at the meeting.
On average, the 62 school buildings in the district are 80 years old and barely half-filled. Nearly 40% of campuses have fewer than 200 students, not counting special education sites.
Former SLPS board president Joyce Roberts said she wants a more open and honest discussion about the future of the district.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 see this being any different than just hot rhetoric, but I do want them to be successful,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e have to evolve to a new level of educating kids.鈥
